If you are using Yahoo mail and plan to retrieve your messages using email programs such as Microsoft Outlook, Eudora, Outlook Express, you might be a bit disappointed. Yahoo only allows customers of its Yahoo Mail Plus service to download their email via POP3.
Having said that, you can still use your favorite email program to retrieve your Yahoo mail with the help from YPOPs, a free and open-source program.
Technically, YPOPs acts as a gateway that provides a POP3 server interface at one end to talk to email clients and an HTTP client (browser) interface at the other which allows it to talk to Yahoo! In brief, instead of connecting directly to Yahoo, your email program connects to YPOPs, which in turn logs on to your Yahoo Mail account without launching a web browser. It also reads your mailbox and transfers the contents to POP3 mail.
When you are using YPOPs, it takes up about 5.2MB of RAM. It has a “hide tray icon” option which you can turn off. YPOPs also features a multitude of configuration options. For instance, you can choose to delete the downloaded mail off the Yahoo server, download mails from specific folders, download bullk mail, etc.
YPOPs is free and quite reliable. However, it can’t perform when Yahoo issues a “challenge screen” or Catcha when you try to send out email to many recipients at once or send out certain types of email.
